Do you want to keep type 2 diabetes and heart disease at bay?

Then, according to a new study, you need to adhere to a simple, healthy diet including foods high in antioxidants such as, apples, berries, kale and broccoli.

Researchers discovered that individuals who stick to a diet full of powerful antioxidants reduce their risk of developing heart disease, lower their cholesterol levels and can also get their blood sugar levels under control.

They say that antioxidants known as flavonoids operate by fighting harmful molecules which have accumulated in the body, causing damage to our healthy cells.

University of East Anglia researchers undertook the research over the duration of a year.

93 postmenopausal women with Type 2 diabetes were given two small bars of flavonoid-enriched chocolate daily and half had placebo chocolate bars.

The ones who got the additional flavonoids lowered their risk of a heart attack by 3.4 per cent. It was found that their insulin resistance and cholesterol levels had been considerably lowered by the flavonoids.

The findings highlight that diets high in such flavonoids can lower the risk of heart disease amongst women with Type 2 diabetes, and frequent consumption of flavonoid-rich foods enabled better management of blood sugar levels.

Similar research needs to be conducted amongst men.
