Scientists have worked out why Indians and South Asians are more susceptible to developing diabetes .
Six new genes have been pinpointed as those which trigger diabetes and renders Indians and south asians four times more likely than Caucasians to develop type 2 diabetes.
Dr Mohan, the study leader, stated that the aim behind this finding is to ensure better diagnosis and treatments in the future.
For the study, the researchers compared the DNA of 18,000 plus type 2 diabetics South Asians with almost 40,000 non diabetics worldwide.
66 million South Asians are type 2 diabetic and they total 51 million in India alone.
Apart from the study findings, medics emphasise that the disease occurs due to inadequate exercise, poor diets and high stress levels.
The journey begins from birth; so if a mother is undernourished the likelihood of the baby developing diabetes is great.
