Diabetics are at a higher risk of developing dementia than non diabetics .
These are the findings of a new study. Scientists have considered the two diseases to be connected for many years.
However, this most recent study highlights how treatment of preventable diseases, such as, obesity and diabetes can be key in the prevention of the onset of dementia.
The Japanese research findings emphasise the necessity to consider diabetes as a possible factor for increasing the risk of developing dementia.
Diabetes is almost at epidemic proportions across the world.
In 1985, the researchers started measuring how many people got dementia. They then monitored 1,000 participants for 11 years.
27 per cent of those with diabetes developed dementia, whereas, 21 per cent of non diabetics did.
The connection made is not especially new, yet it has serious implications for the importance of diabetes treatment.
