Fri, 28 Oct 2011
The number of diabetics in the UK has gone up by 50 per cent in the last five years.

This has bee fuelled by growing levels of obesity .

Approximately three million adults and children have diabetes, the numbers of diabetics in the UK having increased by more than 117,000 in the just the last 12 months.

Diabetes UK, the diabetes charity, has warned that the NHS is presently spending £9billion per annum treating those who are diabetic, which constitutes nearly a tenth of its budget.

It is thought that excess fat messes up the effective working of insulin, a key hormone which transports sugar to your cells; this can trigger type 2 diabetes.

Around 90 per cent of diabetics have type 2 diabetes, a kind of diabetes which can be triggered by being overweight or obese.

The remainder have type 1 diabetes which is considered to be genetic.

Health experts deem the rise in diabetes on increasing obesity levels, by diets of processed and junk food diets as well as inadequate exercise.

Recent NHS statistics highlight that a quarter of adults and a fifth of ten year olds have been categorised as being clinically obese, according to the latest NHS figures.
