New research from the University of Glasgow highlights that men develop type 2 diabetes at a lesser body mass index than women.

This could go a long way to explain the reason for men having higher rates of diabetes in many countries throughout the world.

Type 2 diabetes is a condition triggered by excess sugar in the blood. This happens when the body's ability to regulate sugar levels in various organs is disrupted.

In the UK there are approximately 2.8 million diabetics .

Being overweight is a huge risk factor with regard to becoming type 2 diabetic; there are other related factors, such as, ethnicity, age and genes.

Previous research has intimated that middle-aged men more at risk of developing diabetes than women; a possible reason for this is that men need to gain less weight than women to develop type 2 diabetes.
