Mon, 10 Oct 2011
There is a huge recruitment drive to match thousands of diabetics with research projects aimed to discover a cure.

There are currently only one per cent of diabetics in clinical trials, as opposed to 30 per cent for cancer patients.

Approximately, 2.8 million Britons have diabetes and another 800,000 remain undiagnosed.

A reason for this is that diabetics mostly only see their GP.

Three regions in England have been selected to pilot a scheme which aims to offer 25,000 diabetics the opportunity to participated in clinical trials or other forms of research.

There is a huge recruitment drive in north-east London, the south-west and north-west of England.

It is considered beneficial for diabetics to that clinical trials take place in order to find better treatments for diabetes.

Diabetes UK, the diabetes charity, estimates that around ten per cent of the total NHS budget throughout the UK is spent on diabetes related illnesses.

This equates to £1 million being spent on diabetes related illnesses every hour.
