Act to Keep Diabetes Away

Mon, 31 Oct 2011
There are more than 26 million adults and children who are diabetic living in the USA.

The metabolic disease impacts the body's ability to effectively regulate blood glucose; it is also a key cause of stroke and heart disease.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention forecast a huge increase in diabetes between 2010 and 2050 as a third of Americans are at risk of developing Type 2 diabetes .

A quarter of Americans are diabetic, however, remain undiagnosed.

These facts emphasise the importance of Americans knowing whether or not they are at risk of diabetes.

With proper education and medical management, the progression of diabetes and related complications can be prevented.

The medical and social costs of diabetes are going to be more than $18 billion this year, which is a 48 percent increase from 2010.

Type 2 diabetes is often related to obesity, high cholesterol, high blood pressure and depression .

The American Diabetes Association suggests that testing for diabetes be considered for adults whatsoever their age if they are overweight or obese and who have a risk factor.

Risk factors which cannot be controlled include being older than 45, having diabetes in the family history or coming from a specific family background where there is a high risk for diabetes (African American, Asian American, Asian American, Pacific Islander or Hispanic/Latino).

Factors that can be controlled include being inactive or overweight and eating an unhealthy diet .
