Warwickshire Diabetic Cases Increase

The number of diabetes cases in Warwickshire has increased by more than a 1,000 over a year.

The county recorded 23,400 cases this year, in comparison to 22,150 in 2010, with the leading diabetes charity, Diabetes UK, attributing this to an increase in the obesity levels within the population.

Most of the cases were type 2 diabetes the kind of diabetes which usually occurs amongst overweight people.

Latest Diabetes UK figures show that the number of diabetics in the West Midlands have gone up by14,000 in a year.

Diabetes has an immense human cost as well as placing considerably financial burden on the NHS.

Other conditions such as cancer, stroke and heart disease, are steadying or declining, whilst diabetes is on the increase.

The NHS spends £1 million per annum on diabetes and its related complications which equates to 9 billion per year.

Risk factors include obesity, excess abdominal fat, being aged over 40, family history of diabetes and being from black, Asian or other ethnic minority communities.

Just a ten per cent body weight loss can considerably lower your likelihood of developing type 2 diabetes .
