NHS Diabetes is urging the government to invest more in specialist diabetes care to lower the £600 million estimated excess spending on diabetes treatment in hospitals.
The NHS in England already spends £2.3 billion plus per annum on inpatient care for diabetics, which accounts for 11 per cent of total NHS inpatient care spending.
Diabetics are are more likely to be admitted to hospital and stay longer than non diabetics of the same age.
Approximately £600 million of this £2.3 billion annual bill is considered to represent excess expenditure on diabetes, that is, money spent over and above the sum spent on a non diabetic population of the same age and gender.
Inpatient care for diabetics costs the NHS 35 per cent more a year than care for non diabetics of the same age.
