Diabetics are highly susceptible to becoming blind, so says Dr Stanley Bubikire, national eye coordinator based at the ministry of health in Uganda.
He stated that diabetics develop a condition known as diabetic retinopathy which affects the eyes.
This condition involves excess sugar being deposited on the blood vessels of the retina, building pressure which develops into plugs that burst with time.
This causes blurring and eventually can lead to blindness .
He continued to say that diabetes related retinopathy is fast becoming a key threat next to cataracts, childhood blindness and grachoma, which is increased pressure in the eye, amongst others.
He puts the increase in these eye conditions down to a lack of awareness raising by policy makers, diabetics and parents amongst others.
