A High Fibre Diet Can keep Diabetes at Bay

Wed, 09 Nov 2011
New research has discovered that a high fibre diet in early life can protect against diabetes and heart disease.

Michigan State University researchers studied the diets of approximately 2,000 US teenagers aged 12 to 19.

They also tested whether the youngsters had three or more conditions which constitute metabolic syndrome: high blood pressure, increased blood sugar levels and fats in the blood, low levels of HDL or "good" cholesterol as well as a large waistline.

Six per cent of the teens were suffering from metabolic syndrome.

Of them those who consumed the least fibre (that is less than 3 grams per 1,000 calories) 9 per cent had the risk factors, in contrast to 3 percent of those who ate the most (11 grams or more per 1,000 calories).
