Passport Plan for Diabetics

Thu, 31 Mar 2011
Yesterday, a medical watchdog stated that diabetics ought to be given a special passport which includes details of the insulin they use.

In addition, diabetics in hospital ought to be permitted to administer their own insulin wherever possible, to ensure that the insulin dose is administered at the correct times.

The National Patient Safety Agency has brought out this piece of advice upon chronicling 16,000 plus incidents of difficulties experienced with insulin. Such problems have included six related deaths across a six year period.

Over a quarter of these incidents were due to incorrect insulin being administered, that is, the wrong strength of dosage or the frequency.

A quarter of these incidents were due the diabetics involved not getting enough insulin. A further 14 per cent of incidents were due to patients receiving the wrong kind of insulin.

The Agency asserts that the Insulin Passport would enable diabetes patients to receive the correct amount, frequency and type of insulin product.
