Recent Diabetes UK survey results highlight that one out of three diabetics are keeing their diabetes under wraps in the Yorkshire region.
They are doing so at risk to their mental and physical health .
The survey, undertaken for Diabetes Week, which lasts till Saturday, discovered that over a third of diabetics in the region are keeping their condition under wraps or had done so in the past.
A quarter of diabetics surveyed had not disclosed their condition because they feared being bullied or discriminated against. 60% of them kept their diabetes a secret at work, with 55 per cent even keeping their diabetes hidden from friends.
NHS Bradford and Airedale’s community development team has set up several diabetes community events during this week to encourage individuals to talk about the condition. This would be helpful in reducing the impact of diabetes per se, confidence building and reducing the fear some diabetics evidently have of being persecuted if their condition is disclosed.
For further details about the community events call Mr Iqbal on: (01274) 323811 or 07904 332529.
