Foot Health Crucial for Diabetics to Avoid Amputations

Thu, 07 Jul 2011
The main focus of the Australian National Diabetes Week was foot health, especially in regard to amputations .

Diabetes Western Australia states that each week 65 Australians lose a foot due to diabetes; this happens due to damage caused to nerves and blood vessels in the feet.

The organisation states that diabetes is Australia's most rapidly growing chronic disease.

It estimates that over a million Australians are diagnosed diabetics, with over 100,000 diabetics in Western Australia itself.

Aboriginal people are 38 times more likely to have amputations than non-Aboriginal people aged between 25 and 49 years.

It is crucial to increase awareness about this condition as there is no known cure.

On a positive note, 85 per cent of diabetes-linked amputations can be prevented by looking after your feet.

The easiest and best ways to prevent amputation are by just looking at and feeling your feet, ensuring you wear good fitting shoes and having frequent check-ups.
