Recent research shows that those who have fatty liver are five times more likely to develop Type 2 diabetes than individuals without fatty liver.
This increased risk appears to happen regardless of the diabetic patient's fasting insulin levels; they are a marker for insulin resistance .
This research demonstrates that fatty liver can be a greater indicator of obesity and could have an independent part to play in the development of Type 2 diabetes .
The Stanford University in California researchers discovered that fatty liver, diagnosed via ultrasound, is a strong indicator of the development of type 2 diabetes regardless of insulin concentration.
They concluded that that identifying fatty liver in a big population of fairly healthy individuals by ultrasound can forecast the development of type 2 diabetes in five years.
