Last week a new educational campaign was launched to inform those who have type 2 diabetes as to how to manage and avoid blood sugar levels falling too low, or how to manage hypoglycemia .
The campaign is called "Are You Running on Empty" and it is a collaborative operation between MSD Diabetes, the AA, the Diabetes Nursing Group and Trend.
The aim of this campaign is to increase public awareness of hypoglycemia symptoms and highlight what can be done to lower their risk of hypoglycemia, in addition to getting help from a GP immediately if necessary.
Despite the fact that most of us think that those who have type 2 diabetes ought to maintain blood glucose levels as low as possible, hypoglycemia is a constant worry amongst type 2 diabetics .
A recent study showed that 38% of 342 people examined with reported symptoms of hypoglycemia over a year had their normal activities interrupted. Of them 7 per cent needed assistance or medical attention.
Moreover, 5,000 individuals in the UK experience severe hypoglycemia every year and need hospital admission.
Despite in many cases hypoglycemia being manageable, a recent investigation of 500 UK healthcare professionals highlighted that 54 per cent of healthcare professionals in London consider that people do not discuss hypoglycemia for fear of having their driving licence revoked.
