Breastfeeding babies, ensures healthy growth and also reduces the risk of developing diabetes and becoming overweight as adults, according to a recent Danish study.
The results of the massive Danish study of young children, conducted by the University of Copenhagen, discovered that breastfeeding reduces the levels of the growth hormones IGF-I and insulin in the blood of children so their growth is somewhat slower.
The 330 children were examined at 9, 18 and 36 months.
Due to the measurable impact of breastfeeding on key growth regulators in the blood, IGF-I and insulin, there is a tacit implication that a breastfed child is less likely to become overweight later in childhood.
There was also an association between the length of time the children had been breastfed and their weight aged 18 months.
The study offers essential knowledge about key factors that impact on the early onset of obesity .
