VHI Healthcare has stated that there are possibly 30,000 undetected diabetes cases and 146,000 undetected pre diabetes cases in Ireland.

The healthcare company has had a screening research project for type 2 diabetes operational since 2009.

The company has screened 19,000 people hitherto, detecting 2,400 plus individuals who are type 2 diabetic or pre-diabetic.

The figures point towards a diabetes epidemic in the future.

Extrapolating these figures to the total Irish population of 45 to 75 year olds, the company claims that there are possibly 30,000 undetected type 2 diabetics and 146,000 undetected pre diabetics in Ireland.

The company plans to re-screen 1,300 people who have already been detected as being at high-risk of developing diabetes, to find out if their risk has declined at all.

VHI intends to screen another 5,000 individuals during 2011.
