Sanofi Aventis Removes Insulin Pens from Market

Wed, 08 Sep 2010
Sanofi-aventis is to going to reduce its insulin pen range in December 2011 to the following two pens, the pre-filled SoloSTAR and the reusabl ClikSTAR.

The remaining pens, such as Optiset, Opticlik, Autopen 24 and Optipen Pro 1, are to be discontinued.

Even though there is apparently nothing wrong with the older pens, they are to be discontinued following advice from the National Patient Safety Agency regarding reduction of insulin related errors.

With fewer pens on the market, there is a reduced possibility of mistakes happening.

Diabetics who take insulin using pens which are going to be discontinued can change to the use of available pens without having to change their insulin as all preparations are going to be available in the SoloSTAR and ClikSTAR devices. The needles recommended for use with the new pens also remain the same as with older devices.
