Is Obesity Genetic

Thu, 02 Sep 2010
The Daily Telegraph has recently reported that it is ‘a myth’ that obesity is related to fat genes and that there is absolutely nothing you can do to change that.

A research study undertaken by scientists at the Medical Research Council’s Epidemiology Unit in Cambridge, discovered that individuals can lose approximately 40 per cent of their extra weight, which they had previously blamed on "fat genes", via exercise .

Researchers monitored 12 factors related to increased body mass index (BMI) and risk of obesity in the genes of 20,000 men and women aged between 39 and 79.

Some of the research participants were inclined to be overweight or obese . However, the research results challenge the popular myth that obesity cannot be avoided.

An active lifestyle can do a lot to counter an individual's genetic makeup.

The research highlights that physical activity reduces the effects of an individual's genetic predisposition to obesity by a half.

Diabetes UK, the leading UK diabetes charity, recommends 30 minutes’ physical activity five days a week.

This includes walking briskly, gardening, as well as house cleaning.

Obesity is linked to developing Type 2 diabetes, so it essential to look after your health prior to developing a potentially life threatening condition.
