Diabetics May Be More Susceptible to Alzheimers

Insulin resistant individuals who have type 2 diabetes are more susceptible to developing plaques in their brains related to Alzheimers disease .

A study monitored 135 older people for signs of Alzheimer's disease for up to 15 years.

Upon their deaths, researchers undertook autopsies on their brains; individuals with high blood sugar levels when alive were those who also tended to have the plaques.

16 per cent of the participants had developed Alzheimer's preceding their death and plaques were discovered in each of their brains.

In addition, the autopsies also uncovered plaques on those who had abnormally high blood sugar levels.

72 per cent of those who were insulin resistant had plaques, with the figure being 62 per cent for those who showed no indication of insulin resistance .

The researchers concluded that insulin resistance could potentially accelerate the development of plaque.
