In the past year alone, the number of diabetics has risen by 150,000 plus, to 2.8 million.
The data, from GP practices, also highlights that the figure for those registered as obese has increased to more than 5.5 million, a jump of around 265,000.
This means that 1 out 20 of the UK population is under treatment for diabetes and a tenth of us for obesity .
90 per cent of diabetics, or 2.5 million people, have Type 2 diabetes, which is closely related to being overweight or obese, having a sedentary lifestyle and not eating a healthy diet .
Lots of cases of Type 2 diabetes could be prevented by ensuring you are a healthy weight, exercise regularly and adhere to a balanced diet, including lots of fruit and veg, but one which is also low in sugar, salt and fat .
