Mon, 24 May 2010
Scientists are yet to understand how those with type 2 diabetes are at increased risk for developing 24 types of cancer that were examined as part of a new research study.

There are 23.6 million diabetics in America: 17.9 million diagnosed and 5.7 million undiagnosed.

Moreover, a further 57 million are considered to be pre-diabetic, which means they are at high risk of developing type 2 diabetes in the following few years.

Across the world, around 246 million people are diabetics.

Diabetes sufferers are highly susceptible to other health complications. Adult diabetics have heart disease death rates 2 to 4 times more than adults who do not have diabetes; their risk of stroke is also 2 to 4 times higher.

Diabetes can cause kidney failure and is the main reason for blindness amongst adults aged 20 to 74.

Upto 70 percent of those with diabetes have some level of nervous system damage tool.

The new study, undertaken for the German Cancer Research Center, evaluated data from 125,126 Swedish citizens who had been hospitalised with problems associated with type 2 diabetes.
