Recent research has discovered that via the treatment of serious gum disease blood sugar levels can be lowered.

Edinburgh University scientists have demonstrated that treatment of inflamed gums can minimise the complications experienced by diabetes sufferers.

Certain mouth bacteria can cause inflamed gums which can lower the effectiveness of insulin and increase blood sugar levels. Hence, lowering inflammation is vital to the reduction of blood sugar levels.

The research team, made of scientists from UCL Eastman Dental Institute, Peninsula Dental School and Ottawa University stated that there is a growing need for dentists and doctors to work collboratively in the treatment of diabetics .

Dr Terry Simpson, study leader, from Edinburgh University’s dental institute, confirmed that key aspects of diabetes management are insulin use, drugs and diet ; each playing its own particular part in controlling blood sugar levels.

However, diabetics and healthcare professionals need to realise that dental health is crucial too.
