Research Vital for Minimisation of Future Diabetes Timebomb

Fri, 07 May 2010
Presently, 1.7 million Canadians are diabetic . Within ten years this figure is forecast to increase to 3.7 million.

This rapid acceleration of diabetes is reflected across the world, with there being around 30 million sufferers of diabetes internationally.

It is forecast that by 2030 there are going to be approximately 400 million diabetics worldwide, which is equivalent to the population of North America today.

So how are health care systems going to manage the situation?

How are families of diabetics going to cope with the disease which is spreading faster than malaria?

People can be urged to change their diet and lifestyle. Type 1 diabetes is hardly related to our diet and lifestyle, with Type 2 diabetes not being totally controlled by diet and lifestyle.

The answer lies in further research. If it was not for research then from the beginning of human history up until 1921, should you have had diabetes, your life was short and unpleasant.

Diabetes was your death sentence, with very few diabetics living past the age of ten.

In 1921 two Canadian researchers discovered insulin which changed the lives of diabetics thereupon. Without their discovery, the longevity of diabetics would be much shorter today.
