The European Health Journal' has discovered that lower socio econimic groups within society are the most likely to be obese .
In certain countries, like the Sudan, the cheapest foods have the least calories . Hence, the poor have insufficient access to high energy foods and are more likely to starve or become malnourished.
On the other hand, in the UK the cheapest foods contain the most calories. Therefore, those in the lower socio economic groups are more at risk from obesity .
Moreover, in the most deprived parts of Britain there are fewer places selling healthy foods and healthier foods are more expensive in poorer areas.
This further limitis the food choices that lower socio economic groups can make, thereby promoting unhealthy lifestyles, and, in the end, obesity.
It is vital to promote better food choices amongst all strata of society as there is an urgency to curb the increasing obesity epidemic and the related Type 2 diabetes epidemic which is present in the UK today.
It is vital to also change public attitudes towards overweight and obese people, ensuring that they are empowered to change their dietary habits in order to improve their overall health and lower their risk of developing Type 2 diabetes .
