Women diabetics, who add lots of bran to their diets can live longer and reduce the likelihood of dying due to heart disease, so recent research suggests.
Several studies have demonstrated that increased consumption of whole grains reduces the risk of heart disease and developing type 2 diabetes .
This new study suggests that even amongst type 2 diabetics whole grains can help protect the heart; diabetes can place a strain on the heart.
Studies suggest that fibre, antioxidants as well as nutrients in whole grains, such as, brown rice, oatmeal, breads and barley can help lower cholesterol, insulin levels and blood sugar, enhance functioning of blood vessels and lower inflammation in the circulatory system.
The study monitored 7,800 American women for 26 years, with those who ate the most bran being 28 percent less likely to die during the study period than those who had eaten the least bran.
Moreover, women who ate the most bran were 35 percent less likely to die of cardiovascular disease, that is, a stroke or heart disease, than women who ate the least bran.
