The drug otelixizumab seems to stop the rapid decline in the bodys production of insulin, so a recent study published in the journal Diabetologia states.
This quick decline of insulin production happens in Type 1 diabetics due to an auto-immune response.
The drug works by switching off the immune system's self-destruct mechanism which causes Type 1 diabetes . This drug blocks damage to the pancreas, enabling it to continue insulin production.
The research results highlight that otelixizumab can stop or greatly lower the need for insulin injections amongst newly diagnosed diabetics.
Research suggests that effects may wane upon a couple of years, when further treatment may be required.
However, if this drug does prove successful in larger trials, it may be available in the UK in a few years time.
