Scottish Diabetes Services Urged to Do More

Tue, 23 Mar 2010
As the number of diabetics in Scotland grow to 228,000, Scottish diabetes services have been urging NHS Scotland to services for diabetes and to improve the health of diabetics .

The "Better Diabetes Care Survey Report 2009" considers the survey findings of 1,000 diabetics .

There is some praise of recent improvements in care, however, there are still considerable concerns as to significant gaps in services.

The survey recommends that 1 in 8 people with Type 1 diabetes and 1 in 3 with Type 2 diabetes had never seen a dietitian.

70 per cent of people had not been offered any diabetes education .

None of the minority ethnic community participants knew whether or not they were Type 1 or Type 2 diabetes.

Only 26% of people knew their foot risk score.

60 per cent of people stated that they would like to participate in their local diabetes services.

The survey highlights the signigicance of emotional and psychological support, an area in need of considerable development.

It discovered that, for example, 42% of people were not given time to discuss their ailment or their feelings towards their ailment when they were diagnosed or when a further complication related to diabetes developed.

Nearly three quarters of participants (72%) would have liked an opportunity to do so.

This could have been provided by meeting others with diabetes at a local voluntary group.

This may also have meant access to a clinical psychologist to deal and discuss complex and difficult issues.
