A new study affirms that having sugary drinks on a daily basis can put people at a greater risk of developing Type 2 diabetes and heart disease .
American researchers discovered that the excessive consumption of sugary drinks, which can contain around 200 calories each, contributed to 130,000 cases of Type 2 diabetes as well as 14,000 cases of heart disease between 1990 and 2000 in the States.
The researchers concluded that sugary drinks are fuelling the present obesity epidemic.
The research findings were presented at the American Heart Association Annual Conference on Cardiovascular Disease Epidemiology and Prevention.
This study adds to the research already conducted related to the health risks associated with long-term consumption of high calorie, excessively sugary drinks.
Such drinks can end up with drinkers putting on weight easily and increasing their risk of developing Type 2 diabetes, a serious life-long condition which can trigger complications like heart disease, blindness and amputation .
It is crucial to cut out sugary drinks wherever possible; it is an instant way of improving your health.
You can also lower your risk of developing Type 2 diabetes by undertaking regular physical activity and adhering to a healthy well balanced diet high in fruit and vegetables and low in sugar, salt and fat.
