Wed, 24 Mar 2010
Researchers claim that pharmaceutical company GlaxoSmithkline has attempted to influence the debate on the safety of diabetes treatment drug Avandia, known also as rosiglitazone, a drug manufactured by the company.

New research highlights that more than 90 per cent of the scientists who backed the drug were financially linked to the pharmaceutical industry.

Mayo Clinic researchers in Minnesota analysed 200 plus articles from medical journals, papers, letters and editorials, all commenting on the risk of heart attack related to Avandia after 2007.

The Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA), responsible for drug licensing in the UK, presently state that glitazones are a safe and effective treatment for Type 2 diabetes .

Glitazones are not currently recommended for those who have had or are at high risk of heart failure.

Diabetes UK do not advise diabetics using Avandia to stop taking their medication.

However, should they be worried, they ought to speak to their health care team as soon as is practiably possible.
