Results of Cash Incentive Scheme for Weight Loss Receives Criticism

Mon, 14 Jun 2010
A new NHS cash incentive scheme to enable obese people to lose weight has helped a hundred plus individuals to shed nearly two stones over a year.

It makes sound sense to offer an incentive, especially money, for natural weight loss .

We are all living in times where there is pressure on our financial purse and indeed many of us are struggling financially.

The pilot scheme was launched by a primary care trust in Kent. Its offers reward payments of up to £425 and witnessed 402 volunteers signing up for a year-long ‘Pounds for pounds’ trial in January 2009.

Two thirds of participants did not succeed in achieving their weight loss targets.

100 out of the 402 participants finished the course, with an average weight loss of 25lbs.

Experts have been disappointed with the scheme’s poor results as they hoped that such initiatives would curtail the mushrooming rise of of obesity, along with related conditions, including Type 2 Diabetes .
