The diabetes charity, Diabetes UK, is warning diabetics that there has been a 20 per cent increase in kidney failure amongst those suffering from this chronic condition.
Today's National Diabetes audit shows that there has been a 20 per cent increase between 2003 and 2009 in diabetics needing dialysis or a kidney transplant.
The charity is highly concerned about the audit finding which revealed that a third of people with diabetes did not have their urine tested, a vital step in identifying the early signs of diabetic kidney disease.
The audit uncovered that 50 per cent of diabetics had not met their blood pressure targets, with more than a third having poor blood glucose control.
This is a high risk situation as it can bring about future complications like heart disease, stroke, kidney failure, blindness and amputation .
Poor blood glucose control is more prevalent amongst younger people who have diabetes.
The audit hold records of 1.7 million plus diabetics in England and Wales.
