Recent research, in the American 'Journal of Obesity', claims that it is 'a myth' when we consider those who are overweight and obese to be more likely to develop Type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure and heart disease .
The research studies the relationship between body mass index (BMI), age, gender and present health .
Survey data was looked at for around 18,000 adults; their health was analysed by considering the number of prescription medications they took when being studied.
The study concluded that obese and overweight people had no adverse health effects until they reached 40.
Moreover, between the ages of 25 and 70 there was minimal difference in the health of normal individuals in contrast to overweight individuals.
The findings are of course highly controversial as being obese or overweight is considered a huge health risk, increasing the likelihood of developing Type 2 diabetes, heart disease and hypertension, amongst other illnesses.
