University of Pittsburgh Graduate School of Public Health study has discovered that eating a greater amount of omega-3 fatty acids is not related to lower heart disease risk for female type 1 diabetics .
Omega-3 fatty acids, found mainly in fish, enhance heart health by blocking the buildup of cholesterol within the arteries.
There is little known about the effect of taking omega-3 on individuals with type 1 diabetes , who have a higher risk of developing heart disease.
The study inolved 166 participants who had cardiovascular disease .
Heart disease occurrence was lowest in men who ate the most omega-3, 0.2 grams plus a day. Women who ate similar amounts of omega-3 did not have lower rates of heart disease.
The study leader, Tina Costacou, Assistant professor of epidemiology, University of Pittsburgh Graduate School of Public Health, confirmed that even though omega-3 is usually related to lower risk of cardiovascular disease, this was not the case amogst women with Type 1 Diabetes .
