New Diabetes Drug Reduces Blood Sugar and Keeps Weight Off

Mon, 12 Jul 2010
SGLT2 inhibitors form a new type of diabetes drug which reduces blood sugar levels and ensures weight loss, by raising the amount of sugar released in the urine.

Dapagliflozin is the forerunnr of this kind of drug and it is jointly being developed by Bristol-Myers Squibb and AstraZeneca, having been tested in a phase III clinical trial.

It is said to be different to the presently available diabetes drugs, due to the fact that its addition to other treatments provides additional benefits, including its use at any stage of the disease process.

Diabetics who use dapagliflozin also lose weight as the drug triggers the body to excrete excess sugar.

In addition, Metformin helps patients to lose weight .

Patients in a 6 month long study who took both dapagliflozin and metformin incurred a weight loss of 4½ lbs, more than the weight lost by those who took just metformin.
