Diagnosed diabetics can benefit from aggressive blood sugar control.
However, the related risks may be too high for those in whom the disease is more established, so a recent American study has concluded.
The study results known as ACCORD (Action to Control Cardiovascular Risk in Diabetes) were presented at the American Diabetes Association.
The key finding was that blood glucose control in diabetes is crucial.
However, it does not necessarily have to be controlled to normal levels as in high-risk patients it can be harmful.
Uncontrolled blood sugar can damage small blood vessels in the body, triggering cardiovascular disease, eye problems, kidney disease and loss of sensation in the feet which can lead to amputations .
