Diabetes is a frequent disease in Malaysia.
The third National Health and Morbidity Survey (NHMS) discovered that 10% of Malaysian adults aged 18 are diabetic .
This percentage has doubled since the survey was conducted a decade years ago.
Diabetes occurs when the amount of glucose in our blood is too high, and the body is unable to it effectively. It can be diagnosed by a straightforward blood test.
Diabetes can happen when our pancreas does not produce enough insulin ( Type 1 diabetes ), or the insulin does not work properly (Type 2 diabetes).
Insulin is a hormone produced the pancreas produces to enable the sugar in our blood to enter the body's cells. The cells need sugar as fuel for energy to enable the effective functionig of our body.
With the condition, the body becomes unabled to utilise the sugar properly and the sugar builds up in our blood.
In Type 1 diabetes, the pancreas is unable to produce any insulin, with the insulin-producing pancreatic cells having been destroyed by a process called autoimmune mechanism whereby the immune system cells are destroyed.
There is no certainty as to why this happens. However, some experts consider this type of diabetes to be due to a viral or bacterial infection.
