An automated system, called the artificial pancreas, designed for helping those with Type 1 diabetes control their condition, is being developed by the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation International (JDRF) in the United States.
This new system is able to dispense insulin to people with Type 1 diabetes dependent on real-time changes in blood glucose levels .
JDRF has combined with the manufacturer and supplier Animas to develop the artificial pancreas, conduct safety orientated clinical trials and submit the product to the US Food and Drug Administration for approval.
There are many diabetics, including children, who are already effectively using external insulin pump therapy, designed to erase the need for a daily series of injections.
Some diabetics also use a continuous blood glucose sensor for monitoring blood glucose levels.
Achieving healthy blood glucose levels is key tp diabetes management and prevention of complications such as amputation, blindness, heart disease and kidney problems.
