50 per cent plus of those who were diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes in 2009 did not even suspect that they had the condition, so a report today highlights.
The Diabetes UK report, published today, spotlights widespread ignorance of Type 2 diabetes' symptoms.
56% of diabetics did not consider that they had the lifelong condition due to the fact that they failed to identify its early symptoms.
Late diagnosis of Type 2 diabetes can leave diabetics people at risk of developing serious related complications, such as, heart disease, stroke, kidney disease, blindness and amputation .
50 per cent of people with the condition already show signs of such complications at the time of diagnosis.
Most individuals are diagnosed with the condition accidentally when undergoing routine medical tests or when being treated for other conditions or medical issues.
Just 16% of those diagnosed are diagnosed after proactively requesting a diabetes test.
Diabetes UK Cymru considers there to be around 50,000 people in Wales with diabetes who are not aware of it.
Due to poor diets, increasing obesity levels and sedentary lifestyles this figure is anticipated to increase.
Type 2 diabetes is related to being overweight and is usually amongst those aged 40 plus, although there have been cases of children developing the disease.
