Diabetes impacts 1 in 20 pregnancies in Australia and is related to poorer pregnancy and birth results, according to a new report published by the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare.
Diabetic mothers are more likely to have a pre-term birth, pre-term induced labour, c-section, high blood pressure and stay in hospital longer than than non diabetics .
This report, Diabetes in Pregnancy, has had a major impact on Australian women, as it highlights a higher risk of such adverse effects on women with pre-existing Type 1 or Type 2 diabetes than for women with gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM), a type of diabetes which can occur during pregnancy.
Every kind of diabetes has a potentially high risk.
Hypertension, pre-term birth and c-section were more common for women with pre-existing Type 1 diabetes than for those with pre-existing Type 2 diabetes. Stillbirth was more common amongst babies born to mothers with Type 2 diabetes than mothers with Type 1 diabetes.
