An easy way for people to assess their risk of having diabetes has been developed by a team from the University of Leicester.
In conjunction with Diabetes UK, the biggest diabetes charity in the UK, the University Hospitals of Leicester NHS Trust, has produced the first diabetes risk assessment which can be utilised by a multi-ethnic population.
There are seven questions on the Diabetes Risk Score used to to identify how high a risk an individual is of developing diabetes.
The seven questions relate to ethnicity, gender, history of diabetes within the family, waist size, BMI and any treatment or history of high blood pressure .
Answering these questions does not provide a definitive answer that an individual is diabetic, or his or her risk of having diabetes.
The results then need to be handed to your GP in order to obtain a firm diagnosis .
There are approximately 2.6m diabetics in England alone, with 500,000 people yet to be diagnosed.
Diabetes has a considerable impact of diabetes on individuals as well as their families.
NHS costs relating to purely diabetes prescriptions costing £500m annually.
This diabetes risk score system is invaluable as the earlier diabetes can be diagnosed the quicker effective treatment can begin.
