Diabetes Can Combat Dementia

A new study states that prevention diabetes and depression can reduce cases of dementia .

Boosting levels of education and increasing fruit and vegetable consumption would also have a big effect, according to a study published in the British Medical Journal.

Researchers from Imperial College and Colombiere Hospital, University of Montpellier wished to assess which public health interventions could have the greatest effect on lowering dementia.

They tested 1,400 older people and monitored signs of dementia after two, four and seven years.

They also recorded weight, height, level of education, monthly income, level of mobility, dietary habits, consumption of alcohol and tobacco use.

Participants were also asked to complete a reading test to measure their level of intelligence.

Elimination of depression and diabetes as well an increase of fruit and veg intake were estimated to lead to a 21 per cent reduction in new cases of dementia.

Improving education also led to an estimated 18 per cent reduction in new cases of dementia throughout the general population over the next seven years.
