Most People Unaware that Obesity Related to Poor Health

Tue, 20 Apr 2010
The results of a recent survey confirms that most people are unaware that a flabby waist renders them more likely to develop diabetes, heart disease and cancer .

The survey, commissioned by Diabetes UK, the British Heart Foundation and Cancer Research UK discovered that 97 per cent of us are unaware that there is an association between a large waist and poor health, even though 7 out of 10 of those interviewed stated that they had a ‘spare tyre’.

A waistline of 31.5 inches for women or 37 inches for men increases the likelihood of your developing heart disease and Type 2 diabetes.

When respondents were asked to specify the waist measurement which causes them to be at risk, more than 50 per cent overestimated it.

Excess flab around the stomach ups the production of oestrogen , the female sex hormone as well as other chemicals within the stomach, which places individuals at higher risk of potentially fatal diseases.
