A European wide project has produced some recommendations for prevention of Type 2 Diabetes across Europe.
The project entitled IMAGE, Development and Implementation of a European Guideline and Training Standards for Diabetes Prevention, has received funding to the tune of 1.2 million from the European Union.
A tenth of Europeans aged between 20 and 79 are predicted to develop diabetes by 2030.
Diabetes used to be associated with old age. However, it now affects adolescents, children and is increasing at its most rapid within the 30-40 year old age group.
Diabetes accounts for nearly 20% of total healthcare expenditure in Europe, costing the UK £9 billion per annum.
The recommendations include changes in lifestyle, especially in terms of physical activity and diet . Those most at risk of type 2 diabetes who can introduce moderate changes to their lifestyle, that is, 5% weight loss, 150 minutes of weekly activity per week, less fat and more fibre as part of their diet, have a greatly reduced likelihood of developing diabetes.
