China is facing a diabetes catastrophe so recent research suggests.
A tenth of Chinese have diabetes, with the majority of cases being undiagnosed, according to researchers.
According to figures published in the New England Journal of Medicine diabetes is more endemic than considered before, with there being 90 million diabetics, far more than India .
India is estimated to have 40 million diabetics.
Researchers affirmed that quick economic growth has affected public health, by way of urbanisation, altered diets and more sedentary lifestyles.
This of course represents an immense public health problem for the Beijing authorities as diabetes is a key factor in triggering illnesses like stroke, heart disease and kidney disease .
