That time of year has come round again; seasonal flu jab time. This is free for those with diabetes .
In terms of getting the flu, diabetics are at high risk. Hence, it is important to get vaccinated as soon as possible for this winter.
Getting flu can really mess up diabetes management and make blood glucose levels fluctuate. Consequently, those with diabetes can end up with lots of health problems, such as, bronchitis and pneumonia.
Diabetics need to take proper care of themselves when they get a cold or the flu. There follow some guidelines to look after yourself:
Tell your doctor you are sick.
Test your blood sugar every hour as per your G.P.'s advice. Make a note of the results. You can do so on www.diabetes.co.uk/mylife
Should your blood sugar be 240 mg/dL or higher, test your urine for ketones. This is a simple process. You can buy urine ketone strips from a chemist. Urinate on the pad part of the strip. Compare the colour that the strip then becomes to the colour example on the package. Should the pad go purple, call your G.P. straight away.
Ensure you weigh yourself on daily basis. Losing weight without being on a diet is a sign of high blood sugar.
Montior your temperature morning and evening as a fever could be a sign of infection.
Carry on taking your diabetes medication. If you cannot keep food down, you still need to take your medication.
Drink lots of fluids should your blood sugar be too high, that is, at least half a mug full 30 minutes or every hour. You can take this in small sips if you wish; water being the best choice.
Try eating jelly, crackers, ice pops or soup.
Should you be having problems keeping food down, eat or drink something sugary.
Should you not have already had an invitation for a free flu jab, get in touch with your GP surgery to find out when clinics are being held.
