West Midlands Hit Hard by Obesity

Fri, 06 Nov 2009
Nearly half of obese people in the West Midlands are in serious danger of damaging their wealth and health, according to a new study.

YouGov interviewed 2,056 adults across the UK; 49% of those who are obese in in the West Midlands were below the national average salary in terms of bringing in a personal income of less than £20,000 per annum.

The Hospital Group, the UK’s leading obesity surgery experts, have uncovered that as well as earning less, obese people, that is, those with a BMI of above 30, are suffering from the real cost of obesity in each area of their lives.

The tipping point, according to the Hospital Group, starts at just 18 stone.

This research had been commissioned as part of the Real Cost of Obesity report, to coincide with National Obesity Week (2-8 Nov).

The findings also highlight that: 23 per cent of those from the West Midlands stated that their weight did not able them to play with their children, prevented them from participating in leisure activities like swimming and cycling .

One in ten of those living in the West Midlands stated that being overweight adversely affected their relationship with their partner or their friends.

One in ten in the West Midlands admitted that they suffered from diabetes or arthritis directly as a result of their obesity.

This is a problem that needs to be addressed, otherwise an entire generation is going to become too unfit to live their lives fully.

The Real Cost of Obesity report has illustrated that those who are obese in the West Midlands are suffering in their family, careers and health.
