Second Wave of Swine Flu May Be Over By Christmas

Experts have recently admitted that they do not know whether or not the second wave of swine flu has peaked.

The most recent figures suggest that the number of individuals infected by the virus is decreasing.

It is not very clear as to whether this is the end of the second wave or a temporary lull in numbers.

Dr Roland Salmon, director of the communicable disease surveillance centre for the National Public Health Service for Wales, has forecast that swine flu may be over by the end of the Christmas holidays.

He added: "What’s not clear is whether we will have a brief upswing to see us out or whether it will continue to decline."

But Dr Tony Jewell, Wales’ chief medical officer, was last night more cautious, warning that swine flu may continue to cause illnesses, especially in young children and teenagers over the winter months.

He added that it is impertative not to be too relaxed about the situation and that the swine flu vaccine ought to go out to high-risk groups as swine flu is still causing severe illness in certain people.
