Researchers are marking Diabetes Day, this Saturday, November 14, 2009, by investigating causes of diabetes and possible treatments.

Scientists at UHI, the prospective University of the Highlands and Islands, have been running clinical trials at a laboratory in Inverness .

There has also been work afoot with the University of Aberdeen as to which foods are beneficial to diabetics .

Research into diabetes is being undertaken at the Centre for Health Science in Inverness, as a joint initiative between UHI and NHS Highland.

There are two main projects being conducted by scientists in Inverness and Aberdeen.

In the first project, researchers have been attempting to understand how eating oatcakes, porridge and muesli can help thosw with type 2 diabetes .

Scientists believe the cereal can help control the side effects of type 2 diabetes.

The side effects of type 2 diabetes can lead to killer diseases heart disease .

The project is a partnership between the UHI, the University of Aberdeen and the Rowett Institute, which conducts nutrition research in Aberdeen.

The other project investigates how gluten-rich foods can trigger schizophrenia in those who have a genetic predisposition to the mental condition.

This protein is found in cereal grains used to make bread and pasta.

Scientists have been studying the part gluten plays in schizophrenia and diabetes and the links between the two illnesses.

The researchers said sufferers' bodies were unable to handle gluten resulting in damage to healthy tissue.
